I totally understand hot dog contests, and pie eating contests. But why would someone one volunteer to eat a weed that can sting, burn and bubble your skin?
The tradition started in 1986 when two farmers were arguing on who had the tallest stinging nettle stalks in their feilds. Turning it into a gamble, one farmer, Alex Williams, promised to eat whichever stalk that was longer than his own. Thus starting the this weird competition.
Well, in the village of Marshwood, this event is held annualy, attracting competetitors from as far as Belgium and Australia! Participants have one hour to eat as many stalks of stinging nettle as they can, no mouth-numbing is allowed–though a sip of beer in between mouthfuls is permitted. Used as a way to raise money for charity during their beer festical, the Bottle Inn has been home to this wacky contest for years.
